As a reminder, in the previous article we traveled to Gilan Province in northern Iran and became familiar with the city of Rasht and the beautiful nature of this province. In this article, we pay a visit to Anzali Port, continuing our journey in the beautiful province of Gilan.

Anzali is one of the most important ports in northern Iran, which is bound to sea from three sides and leads to land from one side. It covers an area of almost 40 square kilometers and is situated on the southwestern coastlines of the Caspian Sea. It is located 35 kilometers from the city of Rasht and 380 kilometers from the city of Tehran.

This region maintains a moderate and humid climate and its weather is under the influence of the Caspian Sea and Alborz altitudes, like other regions that lie on the northern coastal belt of the Caspian Sea. Meanwhile, the Gulf of Anzali is a safe location for the berthing of ships, fishing, and establishing commercial ties with Caspian Sea littoral states, and has played a pivotal role in development of Anzali Port, turning this port into an important harbor in northern Iran.

Anzali Port has established bonds with a number of Central Asian countries and is of paramount importance due to its proximity with Iran’s highly populous regions and commercial and industrial hubs. In fact, this port is in touch with the harbors, situated on the northern coastlines of the Caspian Sea, and is linked to the commercial and international harbors of a number of European countries through the Black Sea. Hence, Anzali Port is also known as the Gateway to Europe.

The main activities of residents of Anzali Port are fishing, farming, and producing handicrafts. In the agricultural domain, they maintain paddy fields and breed silk worms. They are also engaged in producing straw mats, fishing nets, and different wooden tools as the most important handicrafts of this region. Anzali Port is also one of the most important centers for production of boats.

The tourist attraction sites of Anzali include “Miaan Poshteh” Palace, “Saa’at” Tower, and the lighthouse. Among the cultural and educational institutions of Anzali Port, the Naval Faculty is of major importance.

Meanwhile, “Saa’at” Tower dates back to 1815 AD. Its height is 28 meters and is in fact a lighthouse, which can be seen across the Anzali coastal belt and within the sea.

This lighthouse was built during the reign of Qajarid King, Naser Ed-Din Shah, for guidance of sailors, by the then local ruler, Khosrow Khan Gorji. In the year 1928, this tower was renovated and a clock was placed over it which works to this day following its repair in the year 1990.

Anzali marshland is also another tourist attraction site of Gilan Province, which lies on the southern coastlines of the Caspian Sea and is situated in the proximity of Anzali city. The intact nature, waterways covered with bamboos and lotus, the sound of birds, surrounding villages and small islands have made Anzali marshland into one of the most beautiful tourist attraction sites of the region.

Marshland is a location in which rainfalls, and water currents of springs and rivers accumulate and turn stagnant. Almost 6% of Earth is covered with marshlands, which play a major environmental role. In fact, marshlands play roles in moderation of climates, regulation of flood currents, prevention of erosion of soil, and protection of biological diversity. They also play crucial roles in feeding underground water sources and are considered as the habitats of birds.

Anzali marshland is covered with bamboos and shallow waters. According to law; hunting, fishing, cutting trees, and many other activities that harm the environment are strictly forbidden in this region.

Anzali Marshland has been registered at Raamsar Convention among the global marshlands. According to Raamsar Convention, which is one of the most important conventions aimed at protection of marshlands, the world countries have been obliged to protect their valuable marshlands through mutual cooperation.
