In northwestern Iran and next to the tall Sabalan Mountain, there is Ardabil Province which covers an area of 18000 sq km. this province shares borders with Azerbaijan Republic from the north and northeast; Gilan Province from the east and southeast; East Azarbaijan Province from the west; and Zanjan Province from the south.

Ardabil Province maintains an enriched nature, and historical, social, and cultural background. The especial geological and topographic state of this region has led to creation of scenic landscapes and has developed the enriched nature of this region. The glorious Sabalan Mountain and its volcanic pinnacle, in addition to warm water springs and small natural lakes are some of the most beautiful tourist attraction sites of this region of Islamic Iran.

The Sabalan Mountain Range consists of several mountains and its highest altitude stands at 4811 meters. Sabalan Pinnacle maintains unique attractiveness and is surrounded by scenic lakes. The presence of natural ice which has surrounded the high-altitude Sabalan pinnacle from every corner; and existence of several warm water springs have added to the beauty of this region. The northern foothills of Sabalan Mountain end up in the valley of "Qare Soo" and "Aharchai" rivers, while its southern foothills lead to branches of Talkh-e Roud River. In fact, Sabalan mainly provides the water for the basins of Aras River and Urmia Lake.

Meanwhile, Ardabil Province is the place of residence of Shahsavan nomads. These nomads have long resided on the foothills of Sabalan Mountain and have got used to the cold and semi-moderate climate of this region and its green meadows, while the Sabalan Pinnacle has long been witness to migration of nomads from south to north and vice versa, while leading a simple life.

In general, Ardabil Province maintains three climates, namely the cold regions covering Sabalan altitudes; moderate climate covering Ardabil city; and warm regions including Moqaan plain. The presence of several natural sources such as numerous lakes, warm mineral water springs, hunting regions, and forests in addition to a number of recreational complexes have added beauty to this province. Every year and especially in the summer season many enthusiasts and tourists from different parts of Iran and even other countries travel to this region to benefit from the blessed nature of this region.

Ardabil Province is considered as one of the important agricultural regions of Iran, producing wheat, barley, potatoes, and different types of grains, oil seeds, and fruits. The Moqaan Agricultural and Industrial Complex has been located in this region and is one of the major production and agricultural units of Iran, adding to the importance and significance of Ardabil Province.

One of the other features of Ardabil Province is its appropriate state for animal husbandry. The existence of vast meadows and summer quarters on the foothills of Sabalan Mountain has set the stage for animal husbandry. Also apiculture and production of honey is one of the other productive occupations of the people of this region.

Ardabil Province maintains a historical background and is considered as one of the most important cultural and historical regions of Islamic Iran. The presence of dozens of valuable historical monuments bonds Ardabil Province to the glittering Islamic civilization and the pre-Islamic era. The historians believe that the earliest human settlements in this region date back to 4th millennium BC.

This region is home to tourist attraction sites such as the Tomb of Sheikh Safi Ed-Din Ardabil. Ancient hills, old public bathrooms, large buildings, in addition to the tombs of prominent figures and holy and historical shrines are located in this province.

Ardabil Province industries are divided into handicrafts, and machine industries. The provincial handicrafts are often made by nomads and residents of small towns and villages. The most important handicrafts of this province include carpet weaving, production of scarves and woolen socks.

The machine industry of this region is also tied to the existing raw materials in the mines of this province, which include metallic, copper, and gold reserves.

Now, we will introduce “Heyraan" Gorge, which is one of the most beautiful regions of Iran, en route to Astara-Ardabil Road. This region maintains a unique and astounding landscape. This gorge, on one side, looms over mountains covered with thick forests and, on the other hand, leads to valleys, which are home to River Aras. The gorge is usually foggy and its valleys and foothills are full of flowers and plants, with cows usually grazing across its surrounding meadows. The moderate climate of this gorge in the summer season and its unique nature depict a memorable picture in the mind of every single visitor.
