Introduction:Orumiyeh-Urmia-Urumiah-Orumieh-Oromieh-Uremia (Persian: ارومیه‎)

The city of Uremia is the provincial center and the largest city of West Azarbaijan Province. It has long been known for the peaceful co-existence of the different ethnic groups, and different races who reside in this city. Now, let's become more familiar with the city of Uremia.

The city of Uremia is situated on a plain. It is 70 kilometers in length and 30 kilometers in width, and is located next to Uremia Lake. This city is en route to Caucasus region, Armenia, Asia Minor, and Mesopotamia, on one hand, and next to Uremia Lake, on the other hand, thereby maintaining an especial position.

It is one of the centers of civilization in Iran's plateau. The presence of several historical hills, six kilometers southeast of the city of Uremia proves this statement. Some of the inscriptions, recovered from these hills date back to 2000 BC. According to writings of a number of Islamic historians, Uremia was the hometown of the prophet, Zoroaster.

Meanwhile, according to historical evidences, the Roman emperors on several occasions passed through the city of Uremia to seize the fire places of the Zoroastrians.

Upon the advent of Islam, the city of Uremia turned into the second largest city of Azarbaijan. According to the Muslim tourist, Ebn-e Hoqel, Uremia was a developed city in 4th Century AH, and was a commercial hub in that era. The historian and geographer of 7th Century AH, Yagut-e Hamavi, writes that: "I saw the city of Uremia in 616 AH. It is a blessed city with ample fruits, plentiful orchards, a healthy weather condition, and sufficient water sources."
