Introduction: Nehbandan City(Persian:شهر نهبندان)

Nehbandan, the Longstanding and Stable City

With 41102 square meters area, Nehbandan is the most southern city in Southern Khorasan Province. The city is located on 60°, 30´ longitude, 31°, 33´ latitude and 1196 meters altitude. Nehbandan is located on a vast plain field because of its natural situation and neighboring to salt desert. From viewpoint of land roughness, city is limited to a mountain in north with 2500 meters height of tops. Kooh Sorkh (red mount), Kooh Bidmeshk (musk-willow mount) and Kooh Boobak are some of these heights.

Historical Background:
When Sistan and Ghohestan were considered as two Chief Lands, “Neh” and “Bandan” were two important governmental centers, a deputy governor was appointed by King for each of them. “Neh” was greater and more important than “Bandan”. Because there were too many cities around the country that “Neh” was compounded in their names, to introduce this region “Neh” was pronounced with “Bandan”. Later, “Neh” was centralized and developed and the city was named “Nehbandan”. There are very limited signs of historical background of Nehbandan during pre-Islamic era in historical books. A brief itinerary book by Isadora Khraski is one of the independent and unique resources about Iran which is approximately written contemporary to Christ’s nativity and is important because of its information about eastern Iran. It is presumed from statements of Kharaski that “Nieh” or “Neh” had been an important city in eastern edge of Loot Desert. Being written by Hamdollah-Ibn-Abibakr during Islamic period, “Nozhatol-Gholoob” is the second resource. He describes “Neh” as the third land established by Ardeshir Babakan, the founder of Samanides, who ruled over Iran from 226-241 Hegira. Hamdollah Mostofi says: “When Ardeshir founded “Neh” as a city on Mofazeh region, Shapoor, son of Ardeshir and ruler of Khorasan, demanded the city from his father, but his father denied. Shapoor was hurt and rebuilt there and renamed it Neh-Shapoor (Neishaboor)”.
