Khoy, a city in West Azarbaijan province, is located to the north of Orumieh, the provincial capital.

The region’s economy revolves around agriculture, particularly the production of fruit, grain and timber.

Khoy is nicknamed the Sunflower City of Iran, reported.

While the local language is Azeri, most inhabitants can converse in Persian. The main religion in Khoy is Shiite Islam, similar to other parts of the country.

Down History Lane

Khoy is a historical city located on the Silk Road. There are many relics remaining in the city from different eras.

The city has witnessed many battles in different eras and was occupied by enemies several times.

Khoy was the capital of the “Emirate of Khoy”, born out of the Armenian Vaspurakan Kingdom between 908 and 1021. During 1208-10, it was occupied by the forces of Tamar of Georgia.

The city was attacked by Russia in 1827. In 1911, it was occupied by Ottoman troops, followed in World War I, who withdrew in 1917. In World War II, it was again occupied by Soviet troops, who remained until 1946.

1- Darvazeh Sangi (Stony Gateway)

This gateway is located to the south of the ancient bazaar of Khoy and was the original gateway of this city to the city of Salmas.

Some attribute this relic to the Ilkhanid era and some to the Qajar period. The northern side of the gateway is constructed in brick laid out diagonally, whereas the southern part has been worked in two colored stone, i.e., black and gray alternately, and has turned out in a semi-circular harmony.

Under the arch is a simple engraving of two static lions. This gateway is a remnant of the ancient Khoy city and the surrounding moat has been discovered in the excavation.

2-Shams-e Tabrizi Tomb

Shams-e Tabrizi or Shamseddin Mohammad (died ca.1248) was a Persian Muslim, who is considered the spiritual instructor of Molana Jalaleddin Mohammad Balkhi also known as Rumi, is accorded great reverence in Rumi’s poetic collection, in particular “Divan-e Shams-e Tabrizi” (The Works of Shams of Tabriz(.

Tradition holds that Shams taught Rumi in seclusion in Konya for 40 days, before fleeing for Damascus.

Shams-e Tabrizi died in Khoy and is buried there. His tomb is located in a garden in the northeast of Khoy and regarded one of the most important attractions of the city.

3- Khatoun Bridge

The bridge is made of brick. It is 59.40 meters in length, 8.70 meters in width, and 6.48 meters in height.

Repaired in recent years, the bridge is constructed over Salmas River.

4- Khoy Bazaar

The Grand Bazaar of Khoy is situated in the eastern part of the city parallel to Taleqani and Enqelab streets. This bazaar is a remnant of Safavid, Zandiyeh and Qajar periods in 4th century AH.

This bazaar is composed of various sections.

Other Landmarks

From among the attractions of Khoy, Motalleb Khan Mosque is a prominent landmark. Situated in the central part of the city, this mosque belongs to the Ilkhanid era.

Sorp Serkis Church was reconstructed in the Qajar period after it suffered destruction. It has beautiful plaster moldings and engravings.

The church dates back to the 4th century AD and has been registered on the National Heritage List.
