Introduction:Ilam (Persian:ایلام )

Ilam land of the unknown

Iran is an ancient land with enormous cultural richness and historical edifices. However, many parts of the country, such as Ilam province that has many monuments and beautiful natural attractions, are still unknown to even Iranians.

The territory, based on historical documents, was part of the ancient country Ilam, which was established in about 3000 BC and thrived till 640 BC.

Some 80 years ago, Ilam was considered part of the fifth province, namely Kermanshah. Today, it is one of the important provinces of the country, IRNA reported.

Since the formation of this region and presence of human settlement there, Iranians created many monuments.

Tourists and admirers of ancient relics can visit this region and become familiar with the unique historical works and the untouched natural resources of this province.

Imamzadeh Pirhussein (AS)

One of the historical places of the province is Imamzadeh Pirhussein (AS), which is situated in Zanjireh Olia Village in the heart of Khormeh Mount.

This imamzadeh is a grandson of Imam Mousa Kazem (AS ). The building has been registered on the National Heritage List.

Every year, this place hosts many pilgrims from the province as well as neighboring provinces.

The beautiful nature, water springs and mild mountainous climate of the region make for a pleasant visit by pilgrims and tourists alike.

The ancient mulberry tree adjacent to the imamzadeh hints at the old history of the region.

Altar of Imamzadeh Mehdi Saleh (AS)

Decorations related to the altar of the building of Imamzadeh Mehdi Saleh (AS) catches the attention of all visitors. This edifice belongs to the Ilkhanid period and is located in Majin.

Unfortunately, in recent years, due to the collapse of the building’s ceiling and atmospheric effects, a part of decorations of this unique altar has been destroyed.

Alongside this altar, Qur’anic verses have been written in Kufic script on plasterworks, which enhance its beauty.

Kolm Tourism Zone

This zone has diverse climatic conditions, abundant water and green forests. It has been recognized as an exemplary tourism site.

This region is located on the Old Ilam-Darrhshahr Road.

Abdanan Castle

This castle is located 5 km from the southern part of Abdanan District and northwest of Posht Qola Village on a high hill. Dovirej River flows nearby.

The edifice belongs to the Sassanid era and the construction materials used in it are small river stones and plaster. Watch towers, the king’s chamber, residential areas and a stairway remain from this edifice. The external and main walls of the castle have remained relatively intact. Surrounded by natural water canals, the castle was used for military purpose.

Sheikh Makhou Fortress

The fortress, built in the Sassanid period, is located in Darrehshar District. It was erected 6 meters above the riverbed.

For entering the fortress, stairs were built. However, at present, no traces of these stairs can be found.

The construction of this fortress combined manmade materials and natural resources.

The edifice has endured many destructive atmospheric conditions throughout the years. The people who built this edifice knew very well what kind of construction materials to use in order to protect it.

The homogenous construction materials used in this building safeguarded the main wall.

Takht Khan Stone Inscription

This stone inscription is located in Banroshan area, which has favorable climatic conditions.

The inscription is a parallelogram with dimensions of 145 cm and 190 cm. The stone was first cut by 2 cm to provide a smooth and uniform surface and was cut again to make larger alphabets and words.

The text of the inscription pertains to the family trees of the rulers of the region and some of the services rendered by one of its rulers, Gholamreza Khan who ordered the inscriptions in 1325 AH (after hegira).

The inscription has been registered on the National Heritage List.

Gouran Hill

The hill, formed during the Neolithic period, is located in Shirvan District.

Excavations were carried out on this hill in 1963, which helped identify 21 layers. The first objects on this hill were discovered in the 16th layer.

The original residents of the hill were migrants of the region who resided there for a short period of time.

Halouch Cemetery

This cemetery is located in Ivan District. It is located some 200 meters from the northeast of the historical hill of Qala Zarneh.

Lalar Hill

The hill has been registered as national heritage. Because of its mountainous location, the site was forgotten for some 76 years.

In view of the relics found in the region, this hill belongs to the Sassanid era and was very important in its own time.

Gavmishan Bridge

This bridge also belongs to the Sassanid period and is situated over Seimareh River in Darrehshahr District.

In view of the strategic position of the region, the bridge was repaired and used in later periods.

The beautiful natural resources surrounding the bridge appeal to many domestic and foreign tourists.
