Introduction:Behbahan(Persian: بهبهان )

Behbahan is a small haven with numerous historical and natural sites. It is renowned for the colorful fields of daffodils and corn poppy.

Although the history of Behbahan is ancient, travelers visiting Khuzestan province do not know much about Behbahan and mostly tour Ahvaz, Abadan, Khorramshahr, Shoushtar and Shoush.

During Nowruz (the Iranian New Year), Khuzestan becomes the destination of many travelers. However, most of these travelers are only familiar with certain cities of this province. This is while in the eastern parts of the province, there exists a city with many ecotourism attractions and hospitable people, CHN reported

Behbahan is, indeed, a paradise. In fall and winter, the scent of daffodils intoxicates all visitors. Daffodils remain till spring when the yellowness of daffodil is replaced with the redness of corn poppy.

The present-day Behbahan or the former Arjan is a city with many beautiful historical sites.

Kheirabad Village, which is located near the city, is a must-see place. Kheirabad’s school, which dates back to the Safavid era, is a unique tourism attraction.

The historical bridge of Kheiri Mah Khan is situated along the border of Khuzestan and Kohgilouyeh-Boyerahmad provinces. The bridge is in shambles, but its grandeur catches the attention of all visitors.

Another tourism attraction of Behbahan is Bakan Bathhouse, which belongs to the Sassanid era. This bathhouse is located alongside Maroun River near Imam Reza (AS) Village.

Behbahan also boasts of a mountain known as Castle of Hassan Sabah.

There is another tourism attraction geographically located in Kohgilouyeh-Boyerahmad province, which can be reached through Behbahan. The place is known as Tang-e Sarvak. It is a mountainous region with ancient cypress trees.

The city’s grand mosque, Imamzadeh Haidar, its historic texture and old bazaar, which in the past was a regional trade hub, are not to be missed.

A small hike will take visitors to a rocky area where unparalleled engraved images belonging to the pre-Islamic period can surprise all visitors.

The importance and historical precedence of Behbahan came to light upon the discovery of Arjan Treasury in the fall of 1982 while building a dam over Maroun River.

This treasury included a mausoleum with a large grave made of bronze and a number of artifacts. These artifacts consisted of a golden ring, 98 golden buttons, a dagger, a silver bar, a bronze chalice, ten cylindrical dishes and a bronze tray with historical images.

Unfortunately, Behbahan is not included in the tour and travel agencies’ itinerary and those who are interested should make personal initiatives to visit this historical city.

There is only one hotel in this city, which belongs to the Energy Ministry. Of course, there are beautiful villas belonging to this ministry alongside the lake of Maroun Dam, which can be used by the public. There are also camping areas in the vicinity of the city.

Another point which deserves mention is the city’s handicrafts. The workshop for weaving Aba (men’s loose sleeveless cloak which is open in front and worn over a shirt) is a courtyard where a few old men are busy working. Behbahan’s dates and yoghurt are delicious delicacies.
