Introduction: Meshkin shahr (Persian: مشکین شهر )

Meshkin-Shahr is situated 840 kilometers away from the city of Tehran in Ardebil province.

This city is a wide plain with a mild slope, which leads to the northern foothills of Sabalan Mountain. The summer quarters and glorious tulip orchards in spring turn this city into one of the most beautiful regions of Iran, IRIB reported.

The presence of almost 100 springs in this region has added to its beauty. The thick forests, west of the city of Meshkin-Shahr, and the meadows have made this region an appropriate habitat for a variety of bird and animal species.

Historical Monuments

Meshkin-Shahr is home to many hills, castles and monuments belonging to prehistoric, pre-Islamic and post-Islamic eras. These historical monuments in this city prove the ancient history of this region.

A number of objects belonging to the first millennium BC have been discovered in this region. Also, a number of books, penned by geographers and tourists, have referred to Meshkin-Shahr.

For instance, Hamdollah Mostofi, in the book compiled in 14th century AD has mentioned this city.

Tomb of Sheikh Heydar

The tomb of Sheikh Heydar, the father of Safavid king, Shah Ismail, is a tower situated in the middle of an orchard. Experts believe that this tomb belongs to 13th century AD.

This tower has a height of 18 meters. It is in the form of a cylinder from outside and a regular dodecagon from inside.

Parts of this tower are decorated with blue-colored tiles. This tomb was registered as a national historical monument in 1932.

Qal’eh Kohneh

Another historical monument is Qal’eh Kohneh. The ceramic and gunmetal objects found in this castle prove that this historical monument belongs to the pre-Islamic era.

This castle is shaped as a trapezium and its walls are made of stone, plaster, limestone and sun-dried bricks.

An inscription written in the language of ancient Iran is situated 150 meters from this castle.

Experts believe that this inscription belongs to the years 309 to 379 AD, which are concurrent with the Sassanid Era.

Nomadic Handicrafts

Meshkin-Shahr is located on the migratory path of nomads. Hence, this region enjoys a merited status in the production of nomadic handicrafts. It is well known for its rug-weaving.

The nomads of Meshkin-Shahr are engaged in rug-weaving with wool obtained from their livestock. Many have set up rug looms.

Rug-weaving, like many other rural and nomadic handicrafts, is the profession of women in this part of Iran and these unknown art-lovers create astounding patterns with their skilled hands.

The hand-woven rugs of this region are also exported to European countries.

The city is also famed for its pottery.

Meshkin-Shahr attracts many tourists every year due to its numerous mineral springs and scenic landscape.

Qinarjeh Hot-Water Spring

The mineral spring named Qinarjeh is situated 22 kilometers southwest of this city. Its temperature is 82 degrees and is one of the hottest mineral water springs of Iran.

Also, Shabil mineral spring with a temperature of 49 degrees centigrade is a remedy for mental problems and also helpful in the treatment of gallstone and kidney ailments.

The other well-known mineral springs of this region include Moeel and Malek Soiee that attract a large number of tourists during the spring and summer.

The forest of Meshkin-Shahr and Shirvan Valley, which is one of the wildlife habitats in the vicinity of Sabalan Mountain, has added to the natural beauty of this region.
