Introduction:Isfahan Steel Plant-Esfahan Steel Company-Zob Ahan-e Esfahan-Zob e Ahan(Persian:کارخانه ذوب آهن‬‎)

Isfahan Steel Plant is the first and main producer of iron in Iran. This large factory is situated 45 kilometers southwest of Isfahan, in a vast area in the vicinity of city of Azin-Shahr. The construction operations of different units of this factory started as of 1967, and in the year 1971 this complex was launched into operation with the production of cast iron. The production of steel products was also launched at Navard Steel-Making and Engineering Section with the annual capacity of 550,000 tons.

In the past four decades, Isfahan Steel Plant has registered numerous records in the production sector. Given the implementation of projects for reconstruction and renovation of this complex, a number of projects have been conducted and/or pursued in the steel-making section.

One of the important accomplishments of Islamic Iran in production of steel has been the efforts made to access the know-how related to development of steel plants through direct preparation of iron ore and usage of natural gas. Iran sits on the second largest natural gas reserves of the world, after Russia. In line with usage of natural gas in steel industry, the Project named “Qaem 2” was designed and launched at Isfahan Steel Plant. This project has been totally innovated with domestic technology and by the experts of Isfahan Steel Plant, and is one of the resounding and glittering achievements in development of Iran’s steel industry.

The implementation of “Qaem 2” project for production via direct reduction of iron ore and usage of natural gas ushers in a bright horizon in the current capacity for design and installation in Iran. The implementation of this project, following the success of the tentative phase, took place in less than two years, which marks a resounding accomplishment in the global steel industry. We can reassuringly point out that the innovations of seasoned Iranian pundits in the launching of “Qaem 2” Project; and implementation of numerous optimization projects, aimed at enhancing output, fulfilling environmental projects, and saving energy, have changed the existing equations between developing and developed countries in regard to this type of technology. In fact, the highly capable Iranian experts in the Steel Plant have taken major strides on the path to technological and financial independence.

Note that based on the next development project of Isfahan Steel Plant, this plant will produce 5 million tons of steel products per annum.

In accordance to the 2025 outlook plan of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Isfahan Steel Plant should annually produce 11 million tons of steel products. The strategy of the Steel Plant in regard to future development plans is to move toward manufacture of specific products such as ultra-heavy products and railway with the intention of meeting the domestic needs and for exports.

Isfahan Steel Plant currently meets part of the needs of the domestic market and has attained an appropriate status in regard to quality through sales and supply of products to the international markets. The products of this plant and its affiliated companies are exported to more than 23 European, Asian, and African countries, while in the domestic market, these products have been used in major projects such as Tehran’s Milad Tower, Bushehr Atomic Power Plant, major dams, and Metro.
