Arasbaran Ecotourism Potential

The area is home to 215 species of birds, notably Caucasian Black Grouse, Grey Partridge, Black Francolin, and Common Pheasant, 29 species of reptiles, 48 species of mammals, notably wild Goat, wild Boar, Brown Bear, Wolf, Lynx, and Leopard, and 17 species of fish.

There is an effort going on to revitalize the extinct sub-species of Caspian red deer local to the area. The local flora include Hornbeam, Sumac, and Berberis. A recent study has indicated that three sites have the highest potential for ecotourism. These sites, which are located alongside the road connecting Kaleybar to Asheqli (Abbasabad-Aynali-Vayqan direction), include Makidi valley, Aynali forests and Babak Castle.

There are, however, more unexplored touristic potentials. One example is a holy mountain located at the coordinate (38°55'16.64"N,46°47'24.62"E). Most inhabitants of the now abandoned village, Garmanav, were Izadis, the followers Yârsân religion.

They used to slaughter sacrificial animals in the site, which is located at the slopes of a hill. Nobody bothered to ask the reasons behind the holiness of the site. However, the pleasures of an occasional feast was so tempting that the followers of the Shia' sect attended the holy site, too. Nowadays there is few worshipers and the centuries long tradition are almost forgotten. The revival of these rituals may attract cultural visitors.

In the past, Arasbaran was referred to a large region on the banks of Aras River in northwestern Iran. However, today, due to a number of reasons, including relative deforestation, this protected region is limited to the boundaries of cities of Kaliber and Ahar.

This protected region covers an as area of over 80,000 hectares; is situated in the northwest of East Azarbaijan Province, and is engulfed between the three rivers of Aras in the north; "Eelgane Chai" in the west; and "Kaliber Chai" in the east; while leading to "Saaigraam" mountainous region to the south.

In regard to ecological, social, political, economic, and historical structure, Arasbaran is a unique region and it is distinguished from other regions of East Azarbaijan Province in regard to natural and climatic features. Arasbaran conserved region maintains economic, social, and cultural attractions and is the habitat of rare animal and plant species. Therefore, in the year 1973, it was declared a conserved and protected region.

Given the natural beauties and the scenic landscapes of Arasbaran region, it is the habitat of rare birds. In fact, Arasbaran region covers different types of rocks, forests, meadows, rivers, and farmlands, and includes a wide range of habitats for rare animal and plant species. Being a rich habitat, Arasbaran region is home to large mammals such as goats, boars, grizzly bears, wolves, and leopards. It is also the habitat of many bird species such as partridges and different kinds of predator birds. In fact, this conserved region accommodates 48 types of reptiles, five amphibian species; 29 bird species, and 215 types of fish.

Furthermore, the flora of Arasbaran conserved region is another manifestation of natural beauty, which creates a scenic landscape, compatible with change of seasons across the year. In fact, one of the astounding beauties of this region is due to permanent changes of landscapes throughout different seasons of the year. Meanwhile, the Oak Forest of "Mamraz" which also covers barberry bushes, pomegranate, apple, and pear trees, is the representative of thick forests with a humid climate, depicting part of the thick forests which exist in this region.

Meanwhile, according to existing statistical figures, up to now 1,300 different plant species have been identified in Arasbaran conserved region. Note that Arasbaran region is not just known for its ecological and environmental features. It is also home to several historical and cultural monuments.

The presence of historical monuments, such as several ancient castles, proves the courageousness and steadfastness of the people of this region in the face of the enemies.
